When thinking about allergens in pet food, consider ways that your child could come in contact with the pet food and food allergens.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Food Allergens and Saliva<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2014\/05\/Depositphotos_30592747_xs.jpg\" rel=\"wp-prettyPhoto[1527]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1414 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2014\/05\/Depositphotos_30592747_xs-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"Pet licking and food allergens\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2014\/05\/Depositphotos_30592747_xs-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2014\/05\/Depositphotos_30592747_xs.jpg 397w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Food allergens can be transferred via saliva. \u00a0There have been reports of people with food allergies experiencing symptoms after kissing a person who\u00a0has eaten one of their food allergens. Maloney and colleagues conducted a study, <span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacionline.org\/article\/S0091-6749(06)01192-4\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\">Peanut allergen exposure through saliva: Assessment and interventions to reduce exposure<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0that demonstrated that soon after eating peanut, salivary levels of peanut protein were high enough to cause a reaction in some. They looked at different methods to try to reduce levels , like brushing teeth and using mouthwash, and found that they didn\u2019t completely get rid of the peanut allergen. The only method that they found effective was to eat a peanut-free meal several hours after.\u00a0 Knowing that food allergens can be transferred this way can be helpful when considering how to deal with pet licking and kissing in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>She ate what?!Food\u00a0allergens and your child&#8217;s\u00a0developmental capabilities<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2014\/05\/Depositphotos_40135411_xs.jpg\" rel=\"wp-prettyPhoto[1527]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1411 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2014\/05\/Depositphotos_40135411_xs-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Pets and Your Child's Food Allergens\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2014\/05\/Depositphotos_40135411_xs-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2014\/05\/Depositphotos_40135411_xs.jpg 424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Did you know that kids between 1 and 2 years old put their hands or objects in their mouths up to 80 times an hour (ages 2-5 years\u00a0were up to 40 times an hour: see <a href=\"http:\/\/cfpub.epa.gov\/si\/si_public_record_report.cfm?dirEntryId=65530\">study<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/table-of-contents\/how-to-avoid-food-allergens\/cross-contact\/\" target=\"_blank\">)<\/a>? \u00a0For toddlers and kids who\u00a0are still putting objects in their mouths and possibly eating things that they find on the floor, direct ingestion of the pet food (food allergens)\u00a0will need to be prevented. Think about where you place your pet&#8217;s food bowls, knowing that anything\u00a0within reach of little hands can easily wind up in your child&#8217;s mouth.<\/p>\n<h1>Food Allergens and other peoples animals<\/h1>\n<p>Our kids will also come in contact with animals in settings typically not under our control (other peoples homes, neighborhood, petting zoos, day care, etc.) Although risk of allergen exposure and ingestion is low, considering these contacts and ways to minimize risk of allergen exposure is helpful.
