school community to understand the importance of solid information (about food allergies), staff awareness and a strong connection between home and the school nurse.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Food Allergies Then<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When I became a school nurse back in the early 1990\u2019s, there was very little information and very few resources available to me as a school nurse that talked about the care and management of life-threatening food allergies and other causes of anaphylaxis.\u00a0 Christie, a parent who was new to our school, \u00a0(a good nurse ALWAYS changes the names of parents and students to maintain confidentiality) walked through the door of my Health Office to tell me that her son Riley would be attending our school in the Fall and that he had a very severe peanut allergy.\u00a0\u00a0 She told me that Riley had experienced such severe reactions, that he had needed to be resuscitated twice in his five years of life.\u00a0 I knew immediately how much more I needed to know.\u00a0 And I knew that I had to become an expert VERY quickly.\u00a0 For Riley\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more-->Food Allergies Now<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fast forward to 2013, there are many great sources of reliable information on the management of food allergies and anaphylaxis\u2013 at home and at school.\u00a0 School nurses are very well versed in appropriate strategies to prevent allergic reactions and in the appropriate treatment.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\">Three important foundations<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Three important foundations that the National Association of School Nurses has taken in our work in school health in general, in addition to food allergy, include:<span style=\"font-family: Bitter, Georgia, serif; font-size: 30px; line-height: 1.3;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) The importance of depending on evidence based material.<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>There\u2019s a lot of information available on the internet, through people we know and in the news.\u00a0 School nurses are educated to always go to the most current information available from trusted and researched sources.\u00a0 You can depend on your school nurse for answers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b style=\"line-height: 1.3;\">2) The need of involving the whole school community<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.3;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Preventing exposures to allergens and responding to an emergency takes the awareness and readiness of each member of the school staff.\u00a0 The school nurse is the leader in teaching the staff what they need to know and providing resources to the staff to keep children healthy at school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>3) The value of partnering with parents.\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Parents trust their children\u2019s well-being to the school for the time that they are at school. \u00a0Communication, cooperation and trust are important principles to pursue between parents and the school nurse \u2013 the most important reason is that it benefits each child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\">Food Allergy &#8220;Champion&#8221;<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The school nurse is the food allergy \u201cchampion\u201d at school, and is your connection to developing a coordinated effort for an all-inclusive approach to food allergy management in the school setting.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some tips when bringing your child to school each year include:<\/h1>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Meet your school nurse!<\/li>\n<li>Talk about your child\u2019s needs and any anxiety you have about sending them to school (each year has new challenges, doesn\u2019t it?)<\/li>\n<li>Provide medication and forms from your healthcare provider to the school<\/li>\n<li>Provide current contact information so the school can reach you at any time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\">As the school nurse cares for your child at school, she or he will usually:<\/h1>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Listen to your concerns<\/li>\n<li>Store your child\u2019s medications in a place where they are available when needed especially for an allergic reaction<\/li>\n<li>Write an Emergency Care Plan and\/or Individualized Healthcare Plan to direct care at school<\/li>\n<li>Lead and coordinate staff education and training<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\">It\u2019s a partnership.\u00a0It takes a team.\u00a0It\u2019s important.<\/h1>\n<div id=\"attachment_424\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2013\/11\/image001.jpg\" rel=\"wp-prettyPhoto[409]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-424\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-424\" alt=\"Partner with your school nurse\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/blogger\/files\/2013\/11\/image001-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Partner with your school nurse<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And why is it so important?\u00a0 Because when we work together, we keep children safe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Riley never experienced an exposure to peanuts while I was his school nurse and while I coordinated the care for a sweet little boy entering Kindergarten, that little blond boy has now, safely, graduated from high school.\u00a0 Christie and I worked together and helped the entire school community to understand the importance
