People can be allergic to almost any food, but for labelling purposes the most common food allergens are known as \u201cpriority\u201d or \u201cmajor\u201d allergens.\u00a0 There are different ways to come in contact with a food allergen, such as: eating, touching and in rare cases, inhaling the food protein.\u00a0 Contact with the nose and eyes can also cause a reaction.\u00a0 Understanding how to avoid contact with a food allergen will help prevent allergic reactions. <\/div>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Oral ingestion (mouth)<\/h1>\n<div class=\"left\">Eating an allergen causes most serious reactions.\u00a0 Other ways that allergens could be ingested are through saliva (e.g. kissing) or cross-contamination.<sup>5<\/sup> Even ingesting a small amount of a food allergen can cause a reaction.\u00a0 Most of these reactions can be prevented by reading labels and taking steps to prevent cross-contamination.\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float:left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/05\/Oral-Ingestion-of-Allergens-200px.jpg\" alt=\"Oral Ingestion of Allergens (200px)\" width=\"200\" height=\"130\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-197\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Skin contact (touch)<\/h1>\n<div class=\"left\">Skin contact can cause hives or other skin symptoms where the allergen touches the skin.\u00a0 In most cases, healthy skin does a good job of keeping allergens out of our bodies, and serious reactions from skin contact are rare.<sup>6 7<\/sup> If an allergen comes in contact with skin, wash it off to decrease the chance that it will accidentally get into the mouth, eyes or nose (where it can possibly cause a more serious reaction).\u00a0 This is why washing hands before eating or touching the eyes, nose or mouth is important.<sup>8<\/sup> Keep in mind that people, especially young children, frequently touch their mouths, as well as their eyes and nose. <sup>9 10<\/sup> <\/div>\n<div style=\"float:left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/05\/Skin-Contact-of-Allergys-200px.jpg\" alt=\"Skin Contact with Food Allergens\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-198\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Inhalation (breathing in)<\/h1>\n<div class=\"left\">In some cases, allergic reactions can happen when food proteins are inhaled through the air, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In steam from cooking food (e.g. sizzling fish)<\/li>\n<li>When food in a powdered form is released into the air (e.g. blowing powdered milk)<\/li>\n<li>When small amounts get into the air when food is crushed or ground (e.g. tree nuts). <sup>8<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These reactions are usually mild, but in rare cases people have had severe reactions.<sup>6 8 11<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float:left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/05\/Inhalation-of-Food-Allergen-200px.jpg\" alt=\"Inhalation of Food Allergen (200px)\" width=\"200\" height=\"138\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-196\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"tbox\" >The smell of a food alone cannot cause an allergic reaction.\u00a0 The smell is <i>caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are not proteins.<\/i><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"teaching-container\" style=\"height:290px\">\n<div class=\"tbox-hand\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/06\/Teaching-Children-handprint-50px.png\" alt=\"Teaching Children - handprint 50px\"  height=\"50\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"tbox-tc-text\">Teaching Children <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tbox-tc\">Here are some simple rules to teach your child and things for them to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wash your hands before eating or touching your nose, eyes or mouth.<\/li>\n<li>Only eat food that is made for you.\u00a0 It\u2019s not safe to share food.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t share spoons, forks, knives, cups, bottles or straws.<\/li>\n<li>If you get an allergen on your skin, ask an adult for help, clean it off and wash your hands.\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div id=\"teaching-container\">\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"tbox\" style=\"height:126px;
