line-height:108%;\">Two page handout reviewing essentials of how to read a label.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"float:left; width: 200px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/05\/Reading-Ingredient-Labels-for-Food-Allergens-175x400px.jpg\" width=\"175\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-200\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>Read the label<\/strong> before serving a food even if it has been \u201csafe\u201d in the past.\u00a0 Remember that ingredients can change without notice.<\/li>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>Read ingredient lists carefully <\/strong>from start to finish.\u00a0 Food companies do not have to make allergens stand out in any way (e.g. <b>bolding<\/b>, <i>italicizing<\/i>, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">underlining<\/span> the print).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>Do not buy<\/strong> a packaged food product that does not have an ingredient label.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>If you are not sure<\/strong> about a product, call the company to find out if it contains an allergen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>Do not buy food from bulk bins<\/strong> even if they have labels on the bins.\u00a0 Shoppers may have used the same scoops in different bins, and this can cause cross-contamination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>Labelling laws do not cover certain products.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Read labels on non-food products such as vitamins, skin creams and pet food.\u00a0 These can contain food allergens.\u00a0 Other examples are modeling clay which may contain wheat, and finger paint, which may contain egg.<sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>Do not eat food with precautionary or advisory statements<\/strong> such as a \u201cmay contain\u201d, \u201cprocessed in a facility\u2026\u201d or \u201cmade in a factory that also processes\u201d.\u00a0 Do not try to guess whether there is a risk based on the type of statement used, even if you have had the product before.\u00a0 Researchers have found that some products with these statements actually contain enough allergen to cause an allergic reaction.<sup>12<\/sup><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>Be cautious of imported products<\/strong> because food labelling regulations vary by country.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/05\/Precautionary-Statement-on-Labels.jpg\" alt=\"Precautionary Statement on Labels\" width=\"226\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-207\" \/>Food companies choose when to use precautionary statements. <b>They are not required by law to do this.<\/b> They can also choose when to put &#8220;allergen-free&#8221; claims such as &#8220;peanut-free&#8221; or &#8220;milk-free&#8221; on packages.<\/div>\n<p>Labelling laws may change so check your country\u2019s government website for the most recent regulations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hc-sc.gc.ca\/\" title=\"Health Canada - Food Allergen Labelling Regulations\">Health Canada &#8211; Food Allergen Labelling Regulations<\/a>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/Food\/IngredientsPackagingLabeling\/FoodAllergens\/ucm079311.htm  \" title=\"FALCPA: Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 \">The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) &#8211; Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Label reading activities<\/h1>\n<div class=\"left\">\n<ul>\n<li>Choose a few food packages from your kitchen cupboards and read the labels carefully.\u00a0 This is an easy way to practice label reading.\u00a0 Remember to look for precautionary statements that often follow ingredient lists.<\/li>\n<li>Give yourself more time for grocery shopping so you can read food labels carefully.\u00a0 As you become used to different products, label reading will become a habit and grocery shopping will take less time. <i><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tbox\">Teach all family members and people responsible for feeding your child how to read labels.<\/div>\n<div id=\"teaching-container\" style=\"height:330px\">\n<div class=\"tbox-hand\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/06\/Teaching-Children-handprint-50px.png\" alt=\"Teaching Children - handprint 50px\"  height=\"50\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"tbox-tc-text\">Teaching Children <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tbox-tc\">\n<p>Children pay attention to what you do. When they see you read labels, they will learn that this is important.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Even from a young age, your child can learn how to read a food label with your help. Start practicing when your child begins to read. Practice label reading at home and when shopping. This is a good way for your child to learn skills with you present. Over time, this will become a habit for your child.<\/li>\n<li>Praise your child for reading food labels carefully.
