{"id":25,"date":"2013-05-09T01:34:47","date_gmt":"2013-05-09T01:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/?page_id=25"},"modified":"2013-06-06T19:54:57","modified_gmt":"2013-06-06T19:54:57","slug":"relatives-and-babysitters","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/table-of-contents\/daily-life-with-food-allergies\/relatives-and-babysitters\/","title":{"rendered":"Relatives &#038; Babysitters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"previous\"><a class=\"navlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/daily-life-with-food-allergies\/play-dates-parties-and-other-activities\/\" title=\"Play Dates, Parties, and Other Activities\">&lt;&lt;&lt;PREVIOUS: Play Dates, Parties, and Other Activities<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"next\"><a class=\"navlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/daily-life-with-food-allergies\/childcare-and-school\/\" title=\"Childcare and School\">NEXT: Childcare and School&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"text\">With food allergies, your child has needs that require special attention.\u00a0 It can be stressful to leave your child with a babysitter, a relative or other caregiver, especially for the first time. \u00a0Education, careful planning and good communication will help ease your worries as others learn how to care for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Let others know about your child&#8217;s food allergies<\/b> so that they can decide whether they feel up to taking care of them. \u00a0For some, this responsibility may seem overwhelming and too much for them to handle.\u00a0 Others will be more comfortable. \u00a0Your child should be in the care of those who are ready for the task.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Find a time to meet when the caregiver can provide their full attention.\u00a0 <\/b>Do this before leaving them in their care.\u00a0 If you give the person information in a hurry as you are leaving, you may forget to mention important details. \u00a0Also, it is not a reasonable or fair way to teach others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Talk to the caregiver about food that your child can eat.<\/b> \u00a0If the person does not feel comfortable preparing food for your child, offer to do this yourself.\u00a0 If they agree to prepare food, make sure they know how to ensure the food is free of your child\u2019s allergens.
