{"id":31,"date":"2013-05-09T01:38:57","date_gmt":"2013-05-09T01:38:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/?page_id=31"},"modified":"2013-06-11T17:18:47","modified_gmt":"2013-06-11T21:18:47","slug":"when-children-feel-different","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/table-of-contents\/food-allergy-challenges\/when-children-feel-different\/","title":{"rendered":"When Children Feel Different or Frustrated"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"previous\"><a class=\"navlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/food-allergy-challenges\/managing-anxiety\/\" title=\"Managing Anxiety and Feeling in Control\">&lt;&lt;&lt;PREVIOUS: Managing Anxiety and Feeling in Control<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"next\"><a class=\"navlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/food-allergy-challenges\/you-are-a-role-model\/\" title=\"You are a Role Model\">NEXT: You are a Role Model&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"text\">Sometimes children may feel different because of their allergy.<sup>27<\/sup> It is normal for them to want to be just like other kids.\u00a0 You can help your child when they go through a difficult time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Listen to your child.<\/b>\u00a0 When your child is upset or worried, listen without interrupting them.\u00a0 You may want to say, \u201cIt will be fine\u201d or to try to fix the problem but remember that it can be helpful for them to talk about their concerns and let them know you \u201cget it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Help them come up with solutions to problems.<\/b>\u00a0 Children can feel more in control if they participate in making decisions.\u00a0 Even young children can be involved in decisions such as choosing safe snacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Teach your child how to handle bullying and teasing.\u00a0 <\/b>These are serious matters that should never be ignored.\u00a0 Tell your child to get help from an adult if they ever feel threatened.\u00a0 Let them know that it is their right to be safe and treated with respect by others and they are not tattling on others.\u00a0 Speak with the teacher or principal about your child\u2019s situation when necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Thank your child for coming to you with their concerns.<\/b> \u00a0Tell them that you always want to know if they are having a difficult time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Remember that there is more to your child than just their food allergy.\u00a0 <\/b>Do your conversations focus only on their allergies? \u00a0Make sure that you talk about their achievements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><b>Let your child know that you are proud of the choices they make. <\/b>\u00a0The opinions of their friends and classmates matter, but yours does too!\u00a0 For example: \u201cI know it was hard when you couldn\u2019t eat the treat at school today, but I was so proud that you said no thank you.\u00a0 Let\u2019s pick out a great snack now.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"teaching-container\" style=\"height:300px\">\n<div class=\"tbox-hand\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/06\/Teaching-Children-handprint-50px.png\" alt=\"Teaching Children - handprint 50px\"  height=\"50\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"tbox-tc-text\">Teaching Children <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tbox-tc\">\n<ul>\n<li>Role play with your child to practice what to say in common social situations.<\/li>\n<li>Show them how to teach their friends about their food allergies. When friends get involved they are usually helpful and want to choose activities that include your child. This helps your child feel supported and confident.<\/li>\n<li>Use children\u2019s books, videos and other resources to help your child and their friends learn the facts about food allergy.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage your child to participate in a wide variety of activities.
