In people with asthma the airways can get swollen, filled with mucus and the muscles around the airways can spasm and squeeze tighter.\" width=\"641\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/06\/Normal-and-Asthma-Lung-Airways.jpg 641w, https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/06\/Normal-and-Asthma-Lung-Airways-300x140.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Symptoms of asthma include cough, being short of breath, wheezing and tightness of the chest.\u00a0 There are many different \u201ctriggers\u201d that cause asthma symptoms. width:400px\">\nYour child\u2019s asthma can control asthma by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoiding contact with their specific asthma \u201ctriggers\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Taking the medicine prescribed by their doctor.<\/li>\n<li>Following their asthma action plan.<\/li>\n<li>Having regular follow-up visits with their doctor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can learn about asthma management by speaking with an asthma educator or participating in an asthma education program.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"float:left\" width=\"350px\">\n<div class=\"tbox-plain\" style=\"width:350px\">Children with both food allergy and asthma are at risk of having a more severe alergic reaction.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\" style=\"width:350px; max-width:350px\">Ask the doctor to help you fill out both an <b>asthma action plan<\/b> and <b>Anaphylaxis Emergency Plan<\/b>.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget to discuss the signs and symptoms of asthma and anaphylaxis with your child\u2019s doctor.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<div style=\"float:right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/06\/Food-Allergy-Emergency-Action-Plan-e1370233009590.png\" alt=\"Food Allergy Emergency Action Plan\" width=\"324\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-208\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"text\">If your child has difficulty breathing during an allergic reaction, <b>give the auto-injector before<\/b> <b>giving asthma medication<\/b>.\u00a0 Keep in mind that epinephrine will treat severe asthmatic symptoms as well as anaphylaxis.\u00a0 Asthma is a major risk factor for death in severe allergic reactions caused by food.<sup>2 16<\/sup><\/p>\n<div id=\"teaching-container\" style=\"height:200px\">\n<div class=\"tbox-hand\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/files\/2013\/06\/Teaching-Children-handprint-50px.png\" alt=\"Teaching Children - handprint 50px\"  height=\"50\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"tbox-tc-text\">Teaching Children <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tbox-tc\">\n<ul>\n<li>Involve your child in managing their asthma.<\/li>\n<li>Teach your child when and how to use their asthma medication.<\/li>\n<li>Tell your child to talk to an adult if they are having asthma symptoms such as coughing, chest tightness, wheezing or shortness of breath.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div id=\"teaching-container\">\n<div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tbox-info\" style=\"\" > <span class=\"tbox-head\" style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align:middle;
