{"id":36,"date":"2013-05-09T01:41:50","date_gmt":"2013-05-09T01:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/?page_id=36"},"modified":"2013-06-10T20:29:47","modified_gmt":"2013-06-11T00:29:47","slug":"teenagers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/table-of-contents\/food-allergy-at-risk-groups\/teenagers\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Allergy &#038; Teenagers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"previous\"><a class=\"navlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/food-allergy-at-risk-groups\/asthma\/\" title=\"Food Allergy &amp; Asthma\">&lt;&lt;&lt;PREVIOUS: Food Allergy &amp; Asthma<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"next\"><a class=\"navlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/handbook\/references\/\" title=\"References\">NEXT: References&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"text\">Teenagers tend to spend more time outside of the home and take on more of a lead role in managing their food allergies.\u00a0 At the same time, they face increased pressure to fit in with their peers.\u00a0\u00a0 Some teens engage in risky behaviours, such as not reading labels, knowingly eating foods that could contain their allergen or not carrying emergency medicine when they are out with friends.<sup>28 29 <\/sup>These behaviours increase the risk for allergic reactions and death.<sup>16 29 30<\/sup><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Empower your teen to take an active role in managing their allergy<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Encourage your teen to ask their doctor questions.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your teen can use an auto-injector. <b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Suggest trusted resources, such as teen websites created by Anaphylaxis Canada or the Food Allergy Research &amp; Education (FARE).\u00a0 <b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Encourage your teen to tell their friends about their food allergy<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Friends need to know about your child\u2019s food allergies in the event of an allergic reaction.\u00a0 They should be able to recognize symptoms of a reaction and know what to do in an emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Allergy management will become a routine for friends too and will not be \u201ca big deal\u201d if they are educated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Help your teen plan ahead for social situations<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Gather menus from popular restaurants. Encourage them to practice making good choices and informing restaurant staff about food allergies. Call ahead to find out about safe options.<\/li>\n<li>Problem-solve with your teen about how and where they will carry emergency medication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Talk about alcohol and drugs<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>These substances affect a person\u2019s judgment.\u00a0 Explain to your teen that if they are under the influence, they will have difficulty making clear decisions or recognizing symptoms of a reaction.<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Alcoholic beverages can include common allergens (e.g. Amaretto liqueur includes almond).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Talk about dating and relationships<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Give your teen the facts about food allergies and dating, even if the topic is uncomfortable.<\/li>\n<li>Suggest ways to tell a partner about food allergies.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your teen knows that kissing can cause an allergic reaction if someone has eaten an allergenic food up to several hours before a kiss.<sup>5<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Make sure your teen feels comfortable suggesting restaurants that are good choices for them (for example, restaurants that you have checked out together) or speaking up if they think that a restaurant is a risky choice.<\/li>\n<li>Suggest to your teen that both meals (your teen and their date\u2019s meals) should be allergy-safe.\u00a0 This is especially important if teens will be kissing.<sup>5<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 class=\"topheading\">Encourage open communication<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Let your teen know that you are open to all questions and want to know how they are feeling.\u00a0 Allow your teen to talk about \u201crule breaking\u201d without the risk of punishment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"tbox-info\" style=\"\" > <span class=\"tbox-head\" style=\"\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"vertical-align:middle;
