The guidelines are intended to teach schools how to (a) prevent exposure to the allergen and (b) provide a rapid emergency response should an unintended exposure occur. Key features of the guidelines include, but are not limited to:<\/div>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doe.mass.edu\/cnp\/allergy.pdf\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/schools\/files\/2014\/03\/Mass-Guidelines.jpg\" alt=\"Mass Guidelines\" height=\"255\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/schools\/files\/2014\/03\/Mass-Guidelines.jpg 427w, https:\/\/www.allergyhome.org\/schools\/files\/2014\/03\/Mass-Guidelines-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"magazine\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1) <strong>communication by the child&#8217;s physician to the school nurse<\/strong> regarding the diagnosis of a life threatening allergy (LTA) and appropriate medication orders;<br \/>\n2) a <strong>team meeting<\/strong> and the development of an individual health care plan prior to school entry;<br \/>\n3) <strong>education of all staff on food allergies<\/strong> and the importance of preventing exposure;<br \/>\n4) a <strong>full time school nurse<\/strong> in any building where the child with a LTA is enrolled;<br \/>\n5) <strong>involvement of food service personne<\/strong>l;<br \/>\n6) <strong>epinephrine<\/strong> as the first line of treatment for anaphylaxis .<br \/>\n7)<strong> training of unlicensed personnel<\/strong> to administer epinephrine by auto-injector, as well as the availability of the auto-injector where an exposure is likely to occur; and<br \/>\n8) the importance of an <strong>annual visit to the allergist<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"magazine\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"magazine\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(The guidelines may be found at www.doe.mass.edu\/cnp\/allergy.pdf.)<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"magazine\">In 2002 the Massachusetts Department of Education published and distributed the guidelines to all schools within the Commonwealth.
